Time for floods in Bangladesh
2007 August 6
Almost 200 people have died in the floods in the last few days in Bangladesh and India. People in the flood-hit Bangladeshi town of Sirajganj have become so desperate for relief that scuffles start when boats carrying aid arrive.
The floods have not only brought fears of disease and water shortages, they have also made even basic things like cooking and sleeping very difficult.
In circumstances like this it is vital to provide clean water to avoid deceases. The Army is assisting with this task as well as local and international non-governmental organisations.
One of the major problems in assisting the indigent people of Bangladesh when floods destroy the farmers crops, is accessibility. Many of the roads leading to the areas hardest hit by this natural calamity are washed away and bridges are destroyed.
In Bangladesh thousands of families are on the move in search of higher ground. Hundreds of thousands of people across the affected area are at risk from hunger and disease.
In some areas, the floods are being called the worst in living memory.
