Entertainment
Dhaka's most important attraction is Lalbagh Fort, an unfinished fort dating from 1678 located in the Old City. In the same area you can find some interesting mosques, including Hussain Dalan. The National Museum is north of the Old City in the old European zone known as Modern City. It has fascinating displays of Bangladesh's Hindu, Buddhist and Moghul past and an extensive collection of fine folk art and handicrafts. Finishing with chilliing reminders of the bloody war for independance in 1971.

Dhaka Zoo
Dhaka zoo is largest zoo in Bangladesh situated in Mirpur, Dhaka. It is the national zoo under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. it was ceremonially opened for public on June 23, 1974. The area of the Dhaka Zoo is nearly about 75 ha. It has two lakes of about 13 ha, which receive thousands of waterfowls every year in winter. The total number of vertebrate fauna in the zoo is about 2,150 in 191 species. Included in these animals, are about 551 mammals under 64 species, 1,543 birds under 90 species, 73 reptiles under 15 species, and about 104 aquarium fishes under 23 species.

National Importance
Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (Bengali:Jatio Shôngshod Bhôbon) is the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, located in the capital Dhaka.

It was created by architect Louis I. Kahn and is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world. It houses all parliamentary activities of Bangladesh.

Central Shahid Minar : Symbol of Bengali nationalism. This monument was built to commemorate the martyrs of the historic Language movement of 1952. Hundreds and thousands of people with floral wreaths and bouquet gather on 21 February every year to pay respect in a solemn atmosphere. Celebrations begin at zero hour of midnight.

National Poet's Graveyard : Revolutionary poet Kazi Nazrul Islam died on the 29 August 1976 and was buried here. The graveyard is adjacent to the Dhaka University Mosque.

Mausoleum of National Leaders : Located at the southwestern corner of Suhrawardy Uddyan, it is the eternal resting place of great national leaders, Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Haque, Hossain Shahid Suhrawardy and Khaja Nazimuddin.

Banga Bhaban : The official residence of the President, located in the city . One can have an outside view of this grand palace.

Parliament House : Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (Parliament House) located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar has distinctive architectural features. Designed by the famous architect Louis I. Kahn, it may be called an architectural wonder of this region.

Dhaka Festivals
Durga Puja is the most visibly celebrated of the Hindu Festivals in Bangladesh. The second largest religion in Ëangladesh is Hinduism with 10% of the population. Though stifled a little by fears of relighous Muslim hatred in recent years it is worth visiting Hindu communities during this time to see the colourful statues of the gods, particularly the ten-armed goddess Durga.

New Year. According to the Bangla calendar the new year festival is on 1st Boishakh, which by the English calendar would be April 14th. This day brings various festivals, musicals and other various programs.
However, the festival at that time of the year does not stop the new generation to party during December 31st to celebrate the English New Year.
Being a country with a large percentage of Muslim citizens, the two Eids are also a time joy and family festivals. Not to mention the Eid shopping spree that is known to contest the western Christmas shopping spree.

Amusement Parks in Dhaka City
Dhaka has two amusement parks. The better one of them is Fantasy Kingdom and the other one Nandan Water Park.

The new and novel facility at the Nandan Park offers seven new attractions with many pools and some slides. However, swimming in the real sense is not possible in pools but only wading. The authorities recommend that visitors bring a change of clothes and a towel. For those who forget, the park has facilities for renting swimming attire. The dress code states that, for women, swimsuits are not allowed. Any ‘decent’ substitute is acceptable. Special arrangements have also been thoughtfully made for women not wishing to use the same pools as the men. Those wishing to take part in the un-segregated are welcome to do so.

The Water Kingdom at Ashulia
The park was inaugurated through the opening of an impressive virtual aquarium tunnel from Fantasy Kingdom to the Water Kingdom. In total twelve adventures rides -- wave pools, slide world, family pool, tube slides, multi slide, lazy river, waterfall, doom slide, lost kingdom, neptune hideout, play zone and dancing zone are on offer at the Water Kingdom.
Water Kingdom is open from 11am to 9pm everyday. Special programmes including cultural shows will be arranged every Friday, said park authorities.
Separate changing rooms and toilets for the male and female and lockers are available at the park. Anyone can rent swimming costumes and towels also.
A number of bus operators of the city like Manjil Paribahan, Ababil and Hanif are providing passenger service to and from Water Kingdom. Interested people can take these buses from Motijheel, Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Shahbag and Asad Gate. >>Bus guide

Gardens & Parks
Botanical Garden : Built on an area of 205 acres of land at Mirpur and adjacent to Dhaka Zoo. One can have a look at the zoo and the botanical garden in one trip.

National Park : Situated at Rejendrapur, 40 km. north of Dhaka city , this is a vast (1,600 acres) national recreational forest with facilities for picnic and rowing etc.



Suhrawardy Uddyan (Garden) : A Popular Park. The oath of independence of Bangladesh was taken here and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman gave clarion call for independence on this occasion on the 7th March 1971. The place is famous for its lush verdure and gentle breezes. Eternal Flame to enliven the memory of the martyrs of our Liberation war has been blown here recently.

Baldha Garden : Unique creation of the late Narendra Narayan Roy, the landlord of Baldha. Year of establishment was 1904. Located in Wari area of Dhaka city, the garden with its rich collection of indigenous and exotic plants is one of the most exciting attraction for naturalists and tourists.

Ramna Green: A vast stretch of green garden surrounded by a serpentine lake near the Sheraton Hotel.

Science Museum : The museum is a modern learning center related to the latest scientific discoveries. It is situated at Agargaon.

Institute of Arts and Crafts : Situated in the picturesque surroundings of Shahbagh the Institute of Arts and Crafts has a representative collection of folk-art and paintings by artists of Bangladesh.

Sonargaon : About 29 km. from Dhaka. Sonargaon is one of the oldest capitals of Bangal. A Folk Arts and Crafts Museum has been established here.


A special experience is to travel by a horse driven cart or rickshaw along busy Dhaka streets. This can be fun and is a memorable and rewarding experience.

Picnic Spots : There are good picnic spots in the area around Savar and Mirzapur. Other beauty spots connected by road with Dhaka include Joydevpur, Sripur, Madhupur, Rajendrapur National Park, Chandra and Salna, all of which have rest-houses that can be used by tourists on request to the Forest Department.
